Amniotic disks are advanced medical devices that are inserted into the eye in-office and are held in place with the utilization of a contact lens. The disk is placed directly on the unhealthy cornea and then covered by a soft bandage lens allowing the disk to dissolve into the cornea and begin healing the eye over the next 5-7 days.

What does the Amniotic Disk treat?

Amniotic disks are effective for healing the ocular surface that has been badly damaged by a number of eye conditions including:

• Mild to moderate dry eye syndrome.

• Chronic dry, red, and irritated eyes.

• Contact lens overwear

• Excessive corneal exposure to the outdoors resulting in exposure keratopathy.

How does Amniotic Membrane Treatment work?

A topical anesthesia is used to ensure you are comfortable during your procedure. The bandage is inserted beneath your upper lid and is secured under your lower lid as well. The doctor will ensure your bandage is centered properly. The bandage will look similar to a large contact lens and after a short adjustment period, is usually quite comfortable. The disk’s regenerative properties help to restore the eye to a normal state when other treatments have fallen short.

How long does it take to heal?

Your healing time may vary, but can typically take 5-7 days. Your optometrist will ensure the bandage has dissolved naturally and will ensure your eye is healing well. You may follow up with your doctor as needed to monitor healing and track your improvement.
